FULL DIAGNOSTIC DYSLEXIA ASSESSMENTS
(DSA COMPLIANT)

What is it?

A diagnostic dyslexia assessment is used to say definitively whether or not an individual has dyslexia.

The individual is asked to complete a range of tasks that measure their performance in different areas (e.g. problem-solving, memory, literacy skills). A detailed report is then written describing the individual's strengths and weaknesses and providing recommendations about the support that would benefit them. A full assessment normally takes between 3-4 hours. The assessment may also include screening for dyspraxia, visual difficulties or numeracy difficulties if appropriate.

Why get one?

  • Additional support and funding: Having a formal diagnosis of dyslexia, with detailed recommendations, can help to ensure that individuals get the most appropriate support at school and in the workplace. When certain requirements are met, they can be used to support applications for additional arrangements in examinations such as extra time or the use of a scribe. Where a diagnosis of dyslexia is provided, reports can also be used to apply for Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA): this is extra funding made available to individuals with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) who are studying at university.

  • Improved self-awareness and self-esteem: The reports are designed to help individuals to better understand their own strengths and weaknesses across a broad range of tasks. This can help them to develop more effective learning strategies. Many individuals with dyslexia find it a relief when they get their diagnosis; they finally have an explanation for why they find certain tasks difficult. Reports can also highlight areas of strength that they may not have known they had.

Who is it for?

Children (aged 7+) and adults.

Whilst full diagnostic assessments are not appropriate for children under the age of 7, there are still plenty of ways to support children of this age who are struggling with literacy and research has shown that early intervention is best. Consider booking a dyslexia screening or getting a personalised learning plan for your child. Contact me for more details.
